The oil pan is a metal reservoir bolted to the bottom of an engine that stores oil when it’s not circulating, providing the supply for the oil pump to lubricate, cool, and protect critical moving parts.

How to Tell If Your Oil Pan Is Leaking

Replacement is an intermediate DIY job taking 2 to 4 hours depending on vehicle access. Get a service manual for exact bolt count, torque specs, and hidden fasteners.

  1. Drain the oil — remove the drain plug and crush washer, let oil drain fully.
  2. Access the pan — remove the splash shield, bellhousing cover, and any brackets blocking it. On front-wheel-drive cars, the pan may bolt to the transaxle, requiring removal of exhaust or A/C brackets. On a Jeep Wrangler TJ you drop the exhaust pipes.
