These are typically used as granular “oil-dry” products for floors, cracks, and porous surfaces, not for floating containment. They work primarily through adsorption—oil clings to the surface of the granules.

Granular absorbents are generally not combustible and are better suited to solid-surface spills than water recovery. They can also create large volumes of contaminated waste, since the granules cannot be wrung out or reused like polypropylene pads. Common Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Absorbents

The biggest error is assuming all oil absorbents are interchangeable. Polypropylene, natural fibers, and minerals behave completely differently. On water, using a material that is not oil-selective—like sawdust or clay granules—can cause the absorbent to sink or become waterlogged, spreading the spill rather than containing it. For floating spills, hydrophobic/oleophilic products like polypropylene pads or booms are the only reliable choice.

Another common error is treating granular absorbents as equivalents to pads or booms. Granular products are designed for floors, cracks, and rough surfaces where a pad cannot make full contact. They are not suitable for containing a spill on water or for recovering floating oil.
