Soft armor made of woven aramid or polyethylene fibers covers handgun levels. Rifle protection requires hard plates—ceramic or polyethylene—that shatter or deform the round on impact. A vest that is not matched to the intended threat level may fail to stop the relevant projectile, so protection claims must always be verified against the specific NIJ-compliant model and standard.
What Body Armor Can and Cannot Protect
Body armor is designed exclusively for torso protection. It does not imply protection for the head, arms, or legs, and it does not shield against every hazard you might face. The weight trade-off is real. A Level IIIA soft vest weighs several pounds and flexes with your body; add Level IV rifle plates and you’re carrying ten pounds or more across your chest and back. Start with the carrier: check the straps and fastenings for wear or fraying. Remove the protective panels and lay them flat. Check the waterproof cover for cuts, nicks, punctures, or other deterioration—a breach in that cover lets moisture degrade the ballistic fibers. If the armor took a hit, inspect it immediately, and replace the vest after any impact that could compromise the panels.
Records matter. The NIJ recommends documenting at issue: manufacturer, armor model, protection level(s), batch number, serial number, and wearer’s name. Keep those records current and update them whenever the vest changes hands or gets inspected.
