Snow tires, now called winter tires, are purpose-built with soft rubber compounds that stay flexible below 45°F and deep tread patterns designed to grip snow, ice, and cold pavement.
A set of four winter tires can be the difference between steering through a blizzard and spinning helplessly at a stop sign. Unlike all-season tires that harden like plastic in freezing temperatures, snow tires use silica-infused rubber that stays pliable, along with aggressive grooves and tiny slits called sipes that bite into ice. The result is traction all-season tires simply cannot match when the thermometer drops.
The Difference Between Snow Tires and Winter Tires
The terms are used interchangeably, but “winter tire” is the more accurate modern label. Older “snow tires” were designed mainly for deep snow with chunky tread blocks and performed poorly on ice or wet roads. Today’s winter tires are engineered for the full spectrum of cold-weather conditions: snow, ice, slush, and frozen pavement. Industry standards have evolved so that a modern winter tire bearing the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol (3PMSF) is certified for severe snow service, while the older M+S (Mud and Snow) marking alone no longer qualifies for severe conditions.
Three Types of Winter Tires
Not all winter tires are the same. Your choice depends on the winter conditions you actually drive through:
- Studless tires use advanced rubber compounds and complex siping patterns for excellent grip on snow, ice, and slush. They are the most popular choice for general winter driving and are legal everywhere. A set of four studless tires typically costs $400–$1,200.
- Studdable or studded tires include small metal or ceramic studs that dig into sheer ice and hard-packed snow. They provide superior grip on glare ice but are illegal in many U.S. states during non-winter months (and entirely in some regions). Expect to pay $500–$1,500 for a set of four.
- Performance winter tires are designed for high-speed luxury sedans and sports cars. They sacrifice some deep-snow traction for better handling on dry, cold pavement. These run $800–$2,000 per set.
How to Choose the Right Snow Tires
Start by looking for the 3PMSF symbol on the sidewall — this is the only reliable certification for severe snow performance. M+S alone is not enough. Check the rubber’s flexibility: a good winter compound feels soft and slightly squishy when you pinch the tread, not hard like a summer tire. Measure tread depth; replace any tire worn below 4/32 of an inch. Most importantly, install winter tires on all four wheels, not just the drive axle. A front-wheel-drive car with four winter tires will out-grip an all-wheel-drive SUV riding on all-seasons — the tires matter more than the drivetrain.
