Loose cargo on a flatbed isn’t just sloppy — it’s dangerous and illegal. The FMCSA requires every load to be immobilized so it can’t shift during normal driving. Getting straps right takes about ten minutes of careful work, and the payoff is a load that stays put for the entire trip. Here’s the process that works, step by step.
What’s the Right Way to Strap a Load?
Straps go over the cargo, not around the sides. Drape each strap across the top of the load, then attach both ends to approved anchor points on the trailer’s far side. Running straps over and across the load controls movement far better than wrapping them around the sides ever will.
For each strap, the sequence is simple:
- Drape the strap over the load so both ends reach the trailer’s anchor points.
- Hook each end to a securement point — not to the cargo itself.
- Thread the loose webbing through the winch or ratchet mechanism.
- Pull out all the slack by hand first.
- Tighten with the winch bar or ratchet handle until the load is firm.
Which Anchor Points and Hardware Work Best?
Not every part of a flatbed is meant to hold a load down. Approved anchor points include rub rails, stake pockets, D-rings, and winch tracks or winches. Use the anchor points nearest the cargo’s edges — that gives you a more direct line of force and less strap stretch. Industry guidance stresses using anchor points closest to the cargo edges for a direct line of force.
Straps come in 2-inch and 4-inch widths. The 4-inch straps handle heavier-duty loads; the 2-inch variety is fine for lighter cargo. Whichever you choose, check the webbing for cuts, fraying, or crushed spots before use, and use edge protectors anywhere the strap could be cut or abraded by sharp cargo edges. Twisted webbing is another common failure — straighten the strap fully before threading it into the ratchet or winch.
If you’re hauling a vehicle, use tire straps or axle straps rather than running a strap over the bodywork. Avoid sway bars, steering arms, and brake lines entirely — those parts aren’t designed to take securement force.
How Many Straps Do You Actually Need?
Federal rules set the minimum, and it’s lower than most people expect. Articles up to 5 feet long and 1,100 pounds or less may need just one tie-down. Anything longer or heavier needs more — specifically, one additional tie-down for each additional 10 feet or fraction of that length. Cargo securement rules require cargo to be immobilized or secured to prevent shifting during normal driving conditions. The general framework comes from 49 CFR Part 393, Subpart I.
That’s the legal floor, not the smart target. Multiple straps spaced evenly across the cargo do a better job controlling movement than the bare minimum. Industry training recommends installing securement in a specific order:
- Chocks or wedges go in first, to stop forward and backward movement.
- Direct tiedowns come next, attached straight from the cargo to the trailer.
- Indirect straps (over the top) go last.
This order matters because each layer builds on the one before it. Chocks stop the initial slide; direct tiedowns hold the cargo in place; straps over the top pin everything down.
When Should You Re-Tension During the Trip?
Straps loosen as the load settles and the trailer flexes on the road. Plan on re-tensioning early and often. It takes two minutes at each stop and it’s the difference between a secure load and a shifting disaster.
Do not over-tighten to the point of crushing or damaging the cargo. Pull the slack out first, then apply controlled force with the winch bar or ratchet. The strap should be firm — drum-tight enough that the load can’t move, but not so tight it deforms the cargo itself. Also secure the excess strap tail so it doesn’t flap in the wind or catch on passing objects.
Straps aren’t the whole answer. If the load needs blocking, bracing, or chocks, use them — straps alone won’t stop a heavy crate from sliding forward under hard braking. Use only compatible securement hardware, and if you’re using chains instead of straps, use only G70-marked chain. After the first short test pull, check everything again before you hit the highway.
