Replace the Chevy Spark key fob battery with a CR2032 coin cell in about five minutes, using the emergency key or a small flathead screwdriver to open the case.
The warning appears on your dashboard without ceremony: “REPLACE BATTERY IN REMOTE KEY.” Your Spark locks and unlocks fine today, but the range shrinks daily until one morning the doors ignore you entirely. The fix costs a few dollars and takes less time than finding your tools.
Which Battery Does The Spark Key Fob Use?
A standard CR2032 coin-cell battery powers every Chevy Spark remote key. GM sells it as a Genuine Parts item under part number 19333112, but any quality CR2032 from a hardware store or pharmacy works identically.
You will also want a small flathead screwdriver or a similar pry tool. Most Spark fobs open with the metal emergency key itself, so the screwdriver is a backup for stubborn cases.
How To Open The Fob Without Breaking It
Release the metal emergency key first. Press the small button or slide the latch on the fob’s side, and the key blade pops out. On flip-key models, the blade swings out like a switchblade instead.
With the key exposed, look at the seam where the two plastic halves meet. Wedge the key’s tip or a flathead screwdriver into that seam and twist gently. The case separates with light pressure — forcing it harder than that risks cracking the plastic or damaging the circuit board inside.
On 2018 Spark fobs, GM Authority’s instructions describe prying the cover off with a finger once the seam is started, then sliding the old battery toward the key blade to lift it out. Other model years open the same way, though the exact seam location shifts slightly between the flip-key and standard styles.
Swapping The Battery: Orientation Matters
Pop the old CR2032 out with your fingernail or the screwdriver tip. Do not toss it yet — look at which side faces up before you remove it.
The critical step is matching the new battery’s orientation to the old one. The fob’s internal contacts bend to fit one direction, and installing it backward means the remote simply does not work. Compare the new battery against the old one before reassembly, or check for a small “+” symbol stamped inside the battery cradle.
- Insert the new CR2032 in the same direction as the old one.
- On 2019–2023 flip keys, slide the battery under the retention lip first, then press the other side down until it seats.
- Snap the two case halves back together until they click flush.
Reinsert the emergency key if your fob design requires it. Then test every button — lock, unlock, and panic — from a few feet away. If nothing responds, reopen the case and flip the battery.
When The Fob Still Fails
A fresh battery that still does not wake the car points to something other than power. Check that the battery sits flat against both contact points, since a tilted cell breaks the circuit. If the fob worked before the swap and stopped after, the orientation is almost certainly wrong.
Over time, the fob’s internal contacts can spread or corrode. Gently bending the contact tabs back toward the battery sometimes restores connection, though a badly worn fob may simply need replacement. When that happens, our tested roundup of Chevy Spark key replacements covers the reliable options.
Swapping it now costs five minutes and saves you from locking yourself out later.
