Changing a 2011 GMC Sierra headlight bulb takes about 15 minutes with basic tools — and you can do it without removing the whole assembly.
A burnt-out headlight doesn’t mean a trip to the shop. Whether you drive a 1500, 2500HD, or 3500HD on the GMT-900 platform, the process is the same. You won’t need to remove the housing — just basic hand tools. For replacement options, see our best 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 headlights roundup.
How to Change the Bulb on Your 2011 GMC Sierra
You’ll need a 1/4-inch ratchet, a 10mm socket, and a flat screwdriver. Open the hood and locate the air intake box on the driver side. Disconnect the mass airflow sensor by pushing the tab down and pulling the connector free. Loosen the clamp with a screwdriver and lift the entire airbox out for access behind the headlight housing. Alternatively, push the windshield washer fluid reservoir back slightly to free enough space.
- Remove the old bulb: Lift the locking tab on the bulb connector and pull it free. Rotate the bulb counterclockwise a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
- Install the new bulb: Align the tabs with the socket slots. Push in and rotate clockwise until it locks. Reconnect the connector until it clicks.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the airbox, tighten the clamp, and reconnect the MAF sensor. Test both beams.
Don’t touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers — oil creates hot spots that shorten bulb life. Use a cloth or glove. Always change bulbs in pairs.
Bulb types vary by model. The table below covers correct fitment:
| Position | Bulb Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Low Beam | H11 (H8/H9 compatible) | 55W, 12.8V — standard for all 2011 Sierra 1500 trims |
| Low Beam (2007 Classic only) | 9006 (HB4) | 55W, 12.8V — not compatible with 2011 models |
| High Beam | 9005 (HB3) | 65W, 12.8V — consistent across 2011 lineup |
| Fog Light | 5202 (PS24W) | Optional equipment on certain trims |
| LED Upgrade (Low or High) | H11 or 9005 | 2400 lm, 6000K, 14W — polarity-sensitive; flip connector if no light |
Removing the Full Headlight Assembly
Only do this to replace a damaged housing — cracked casing, moisture inside, or broken tabs. Disconnect the battery first. Remove the front grille fasteners along the top edge, then pry up the center of each of the eight rivets securing the front trim panel and pull the base out. Behind it are three 10mm bolts holding the headlight assembly: two on top and one accessed through a hole at the bottom. Support the housing before removing the last bolt. Pull the bumper forward slightly and slide the assembly outward. Disconnect the electrical connector. Install in reverse, push each rivet center down to lock, and reconnect the battery. Aiming & Common Installation Mistakes
If you replaced the housing, re-aim the beams. Park 25 feet from a wall on level ground with the truck unloaded and tires inflated. Measure the height of the center dot on each headlight lens and mark the wall at that height. Use a Phillips screwdriver on the adjuster gear at the top of each housing to move the beam to its mark.
Two mistakes trip up first-timers. First, LED bulbs are polarity-sensitive — if a new LED doesn’t light, rotate the connector 180 degrees; the yellow wire is typically positive. Second, when reinstalling the trim panel, push each rivet’s center pin all the way down until it locks flush — a partially seated rivet lets the panel rattle loose. Verify the bulb socket matches your old bulb before purchasing. The 2011 Sierra uses H11 for low beams and 9005 for high beams only.
FAQs
Do I need to remove the grille to change a headlight bulb?
No. For a bulb-only swap, removing the air intake box or nudging the washer reservoir aside gives enough access. The grille only comes off if removing the entire assembly.
Can I use 9006 bulbs on my 2011 GMC Sierra?
No. The 2011 model uses H11 for low beams. The 9006 (HB4) fits only the 2007 Classic Sierra — installing it won’t seat correctly and risks damaging the socket.
Will LED bulbs work in my 2011 Sierra without modifications?
Yes, drop-in H11 and 9005 LED kits fit directly. Note LEDs are polarity-sensitive — flip the connector if it doesn’t light.
