Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “This is a really easy to use check engine light scanner that is very convenient and makes it simple to plug into your car and quickly check and resolve car engine warning indicators. I like that it doesn’t require a separate battery and also offers the added bonus of coming with an I/M readiness and battery voltage check features. It feels well built and sturdy, and is very compact. It also seems to work with most vehicles. The price also is a great value, and for anyone, like me, that wants to know more about any potential car problems before taking it to a repair shop, it’s very handy and useful. I’m not a mechanic, but this scanner makes it easy to understand the codes and the menus are very straightforward. I think it’s a great tool for anyone looking for an easy and inexpensive way to get basic car diagnostics.”

Customer Review: “The media could not be loaded. Just wanted to jump in since I picked up this scanner too.If you check the product details, it clearly notes it’s only for 12V↓ vehicles. Heavy-duty trucks usually run higher voltage, so they’re not supported here. I double-checked that before buying, so it worked perfectly on my car (no issues at all). And for the airbag code thing and let’s be real: at this $29.99 price point, most basic OBDII scanners don’t read manufacturer-specific codes like airbag (those require way pricier tools that cover factory systems). The listing never claimed it could do airbag codes, so that’s not a flaw with the product itself. For what it does offer (check engine codes, the smart AI explanations, smooth real-time data), this is a total steal for the cost. Just wanted to clarify those points since I think folks might have missed the details in the listing!”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “This is an excellent tool for determining your “check engine” light issue before heading to your friendly car repair shop. However, I think it’s important to address some of the issues I had upon first-time use.(1) The “directions” (I am being polite) are quite small and the images virtually useless. They stress the need to first download the free Maxi software, which must be installed on a computer before first use. That software (PC and Mac) is available on the Autel site. The software is easily downloaded, but cannot be used with the unit unless you have registered on the Autel site. Nothing indicates that registration is required to use the software. I found out through trial and error.(2) Once downloaded and installed (and after registration), one opens the application and plugs the unit into the computer with the provided USB cable. The unit then notifies about firmware updates, which are easily applied, but nerve-wracking. (As a systems administrator, I wondered while it updated: “What happens if the firmware update bricks the unit?” But all went without a problem.)(3) I attempted to download the user manual for the unit, but found a 404 error (page not found). That needs fixing pronto. Actually, I didn’t need it.(4) Once finished with the update, the unit is ready for use. I spent more time attempting to locate the diagnostics port on my vehicle than I did getting the unit operational.(5) I am concerned that most buyers who are not savvy with computers or the Internet might find all this a bit overwhelming to do. The instructions in the box need to be seriously updated. I doubt the stockholders would agree.(6) My unit came with a free 30 day access to some guru site for expert advice; but, alas, that coupon expired two years ago.The unit works flawlessly and is fairly intuitive. I was going to give it four stars for the company’s lackluster Internet portal, but decided Autel is not in the business of thinking like a system administrator. So, there’s that.”

Customer Review: “UPDATE:I went around and around with the Autel hardware and software support people, once I got on their radar. They were relentless, asking for every possible piece of documentation on the computer I was using and checking my device manager and all kinds of obscure stuff. I got to hand it to them: They absolutely were committed to getting to the bottom of the problem. As I mentioned below, I used three or four (or five!) different USB cables to connect my computer to the AL549, and reloaded the software several times from the site. No avail. They finally decided to have me ship it back to their factory, and include one of my own USB cables that I was using (since the box does not include a USB cable, even though the documentation says it does). I was packaging it up and deciding which USB cable I should send back to them when I pulled a sixth cable out of the pile, and again tried it. PRESTO! The computer connected to the AL549 and the software found the device and opened it. Problem solved. All of this trouble could have been averted if they had provided their own USB cable in the box, but all’s well that ends well, and I highly commend their product support for their professionalism and knowledge level.Yeah, it works. OK. But part of why I bought this was because the programming on the unit was suppose to be upgradable: Register with Autel, download the software, connect to computer via USB (I had to use my own USB cable because there was no cable in the box even though the instructions said there was), and then upgrade the on-board programming. I followed all the steps but computer software would not connect with the device. I repeatedly tried to contact their customer support, both from Amazon and from their website directly. NADA. I got a strange response from my Amazon request for assistance, with strange comments about a video link and whether I had an SD card installed. Then nothing. Whaaaaat??P.S. I tried three different USB cables, all of which I know are good, and on two different computers: Win10 and Win11. The disconnect is definitely not on my end.So their product support seems to be nonexistent. If anything changes, I will update this review.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Universal OBD2 Scanner

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best universal OBD2 scanner, compatibility is key. Make sure the scanner supports your vehicle’s OBDII protocols and voltage system (most commonly 12V for cars). Look for a scanner with a comprehensive fault code database and clear code definitions to help you understand issues quickly. Additional features like live data streaming, battery voltage checks, and emissions readiness tests can add valuable insights. Consider the ease of use, screen size, and whether you prefer a wired or wireless device with app integration. Durability and build quality matter too, especially if you plan to use the scanner frequently.

Budget Planning

OBD2 scanners come in a wide price range, from simple basic models under $30 to advanced scanners over $100 with pro-level diagnostics. For casual users or beginners, a budget-friendly device with essential functions often suffices. If you want deeper diagnostics, ABS code reading, wireless connectivity, or multi-vehicle support, expect to invest more. Keep in mind, higher price doesn’t always mean better for your needs, so match your budget to features you truly require.

Final Thoughts

The best universal OBD2 scanner is one that fits your vehicle, your diagnostic needs, and your budget. Whether you want a simple plug-and-play tool or a wireless scanner integrated with your smartphone, there’s an option for you. Weigh features like fault code coverage, live data, and ease of use to find your perfect match. Investing in a reliable scanner saves time, reduces repair costs, and puts you in control of your vehicle’s health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will a universal OBD2 scanner work on any car?

A: Most universal OBD2 scanners support vehicles manufactured from 1996 onwards that comply with OBDII standards. However, compatibility depends on the vehicle’s protocol and voltage system, so always check the scanner’s supported protocols before buying.

Q: Can an OBD2 scanner read all types of fault codes?

A: Basic OBD2 scanners read generic fault codes related to the engine and emissions. More advanced scanners can read manufacturer-specific codes, ABS, airbag, and other system codes, but these usually cost more.

Q: Do I need a battery or charger for a universal OBD2 scanner?

A: Most universal OBD2 scanners draw power directly from the car’s OBD2 port, so they don’t require separate batteries or charging. Wireless scanners might have internal batteries, but many rely on the vehicle’s power.

Q: Can I clear the Check Engine Light with any OBD2 scanner?

A: Many OBD2 scanners allow you to clear generic fault codes and turn off the Check Engine Light. However, some manufacturer-specific or advanced codes may require professional tools to clear.

Q: Are wireless OBD2 scanners reliable?

A: Yes, wireless OBD2 scanners using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi can be very reliable when paired with compatible apps. They provide convenience and added features but depend on your smartphone and app quality.

Choosing the best universal OBD2 scanner can seem overwhelming, but with the right information, it’s easier than you think.
