If you’ve ever pushed a stroller, rolled a suitcase, or ridden a bike onto a street, you’ve used one. They exist because a standard curb is a solid vertical wall—anywhere from 4 to 6 inches tall—that completely blocks anyone in a wheelchair, walker, or with limited mobility from moving between the sidewalk and the road. A curb ramp replaces that abrupt edge with a gradual incline, so the entire pedestrian path stays continuous.
What Makes a Curb Ramp ADA-Compliant?
For a curb ramp to be accessible, every part of its geometry has to meet specific, measurable standards defined by the U.S. Access Board. These aren’t vague suggestions; they’re enforceable limits that determine whether someone can actually use the ramp safely.
- Running slope: The main incline cannot exceed a 1:12 ratio (8.33%), meaning for every 12 inches of length, it drops only 1 inch. Design guidance says to use the least slope possible.
- Width: The ramp must be at least 36 inches wide, not counting any flared side areas.
- Cross slope: The surface can’t tilt sideways more than 2% (1:50), or a wheelchair could veer off course.
- Flush transitions: The connection between the ramp, the sidewalk, and the street must be perfectly flush with no lip or gap that could catch a wheel.
- Detectable warnings: The ramp must include truncated domes—those raised yellow bumps—extending the full width and depth of the ramp run to alert pedestrians with vision loss they’re entering the street.
New construction has no such exception—it must hit the 1:12 standard.
Perpendicular vs. Parallel Curb Ramps
Curb ramps come in two main configurations, and which one a project uses depends on how the pedestrian is traveling relative to the street.
Perpendicular curb ramps sit at a right angle to the direction of travel. A person walking along the sidewalk turns 90 degrees onto the ramp to cross the street. Because this turn requires a flat place to maneuver, perpendicular ramps must include a landing at the top (typically a 36-inch minimum clear length, with local guidance often specifying a 4 ft x 4 ft area). Parallel curb ramps, by contrast, sit within the sidewalk and run in the same direction as pedestrian travel. Since the user doesn’t need to turn, no landing is required.
