To change a headlight bulb on a 2008 Impala, remove the one 7 mm bolt, pull out the housing, and replace the H11 low beam or H9 high beam bulb.
Changing the headlight bulb is simpler than most car repairs — the housing comes off after removing one 7 mm bolt, giving full access to swap the H11 or H9 bulb.
What You Need Before Starting
Tools. A 7 mm wrench works too.
Bulb types. High beam requires H9. If shopping for replacement headlight bulbs, confirm the correct type for each position.
One hard rule. Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare skin. Wear clean gloves or hold the plastic base with a paper towel.
Removing the Housing and Replacing the Bulb
The unit slides forward once released, without removing the bumper or grille. This procedure matches AutoZone’s removal guide.
- Remove the 7 mm bolt. Locate it at the top of the headlight assembly. A socket with a short extension prevents dropping it. Set it aside.
- Release the locking clip. Pull the metal clip upward and toward you with steady force.
- Rock it gently side to side while pulling toward the front of the car. No wiring needs disconnecting at this stage.
- Twist off the dust cap. Turn the round rubber cap counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it off.
- Press the release tab and pull the connector straight back.
- Remove the old bulb. Press it inward slightly, twist counterclockwise about a quarter turn, and pull it out.
- Install the new bulb. Align the three tabs with the three slots. Push in and twist clockwise until it locks firmly.
- Reconnect the connector. Push the wiring harness until the retention clip snaps.
- Replace the dust cap. Seat it evenly and twist clockwise until fully sealed. A loose cap allows moisture in.
- Reinstall the housing. Slide it back, press the locking clip down, and reinstall the 7 mm bolt snugly.
Tips for a Clean Installation
Work one side at a time. Finish one side completely before starting the other to avoid mixing up parts.
The clip needs authority. Pull it straight up with steady force while rocking it. A stuck clip is normal on older cars.
Connect the new bulb and turn headlights on before reinstalling the housing.
Use tape or a marker to note tab alignment for faster installation in dim light.
