2011 Ram 1500 Fuel Pump Replacement | Tank Drop Walkthrough

Replacing a 2011 Ram 1500’s fuel pump requires dropping the fuel tank to swap the entire integrated module assembly.

Unlike older trucks, this job requires dropping the 34-gallon tank to replace the entire sealed module—pump, filter, pressure regulator, and sending unit. Here’s the cost, parts, and procedure.

Why Must The Whole Fuel Pump Module Be Replaced?

The module sits in the tank under the cab—not the bed—so the tank must be fully dropped. A 5th-wheel hitch on the frame rails can complicate access.

Fuel Pump Replacement Cost For A 2011 Ram 1500

Cost Component National Average Range Notes
Parts (module assembly) $556 – $814 Varies by supplier and cab style
Labor $220 – $773 Varies by shop and cab configuration
Total (all models) $1,006 – $1,136 National average across configurations
Total (Crew Cab) $1,272 – $1,405 KBB fair range estimate
Total (Quad Cab) $1,230 – $1,364 KBB fair range estimate

How To Replace The Fuel Pump (Step By Step)

Work on a cold engine in a ventilated area.

1. Relieve fuel pressure. Pull the 30-amp fuel pump fuse (labeled “Fuel Pump Motor” or F70) in the engine fuse box. Start the engine and let it idle until it stalls—the system is now safe to open. Skipping this can spray pressurized fuel.

2. Disconnect the battery. Use a 10 mm socket to remove the negative cable, preventing shorts near open fuel connections.

3. Access the tank. Remove the gas cap. Use a T20 socket to remove the three screws securing the rear access panel for slack on the filler neck and fuel lines.

4. Support and lower the tank. Place a support jack under the tank. Remove the two 16 mm nuts on the tank straps. Pull straps downward and push the back side upward to slide them off; the tank rests on the jack.

5. Disconnect the filler neck and fuel lines. Loosen the worm clamp on the filler neck with a 7 mm socket. Twist the neck to slide the clamp up and pop it loose. Disconnect the main fuel line connector with its red safety lock—gently pull the tab back to release the locking mechanism; forcing it can break the connector.

6. Remove the module. Lower the tank a few inches. Unplug the pump electrical connector. Use a pick or pry bar to release the retaining ring or tab. Twist the module and pull it straight up and out; note the O-ring position for the new one.

7. Install the new module. Seat the new O-ring into the groove. Align the main fuel line and electrical connector forward. Press the module fully into the tank until the retaining ring locks.

8. Reinstall the tank. Raise the tank, reconnect the filler neck and lines, and reinstall straps.

9. Prime and test. Reinstall the fuel pump fuse. Turn the ignition to ON (don’t start) and listen for the pump to cycle. Turn off, then start—it should fire on the first try.

Diagnostics note: If the pump doesn’t run with key ON, check the fuse and relay first. Code P0463 (Fuel Level Sensor 1) often accompanies a failing sending unit in the module. If the pump runs but the truck won’t start, the issue may be the PCM or TIPM.

FAQs

Can I replace just the fuel pump without the whole module?

No. The 2011 Ram 1500 uses a sealed Fuel Pump Module Assembly integrating pump, filter, regulator, and sending unit. None are sold individually or designed for separate service.

How do I know if my fuel pump module is failing?

If the pump is silent with key ON, check the fuse and relay first.

Does the 2011 Ram 1500 have a bed access panel for the fuel pump?

No. The fuel tank sits under the cab, not the bed, so no factory access panel exists. The only way to reach the pump module is to drop the tank from underneath.
